The oration over Caesar's body
The Oration over Caesar's Body
Painting by P. Piatti.
The assassination of Caesar marked the last expiring effort of republican Rome. His followers seized prompt control of the city and the world. Chief among them was Mark Anthony (died 30 BC), the ablest of Caesar's generals. The conspirator's wanted to slay also Mark Anthony, however, Brutus, persuaded them not to. Next Anthony worked so craftily that he was able to hold an oratory over Caesar's body. He used that occasion to stirr up the people to a state of frenzy by reminding them of all the services Caesar had given them and let them look at the gaping wounds in his body. The result was that the people began to tear down all the woodwork of the forum; and having thus burned his body they rushed forth to slay his murderers. - The artist represents Caesar's wife, Calphurnia, as being present at the funeral services and fainting over Anthony's impassionate words. Brutus and the other conspirators flee from the excited mob. The conspirators escaped to Greece, and there gathered armies against Anthony.

Anthony meets his conqueror
Anthony Meets His Conqueror
Painted by Sir Laurence Alm-Tadema, Dutch English.
After the death of Cicero, Anthony and Octavius ruled Italy securely; but they had not yet met the forces which Brutus and Cassius had been gathering in the East. The opposing armies met at Philippi in Greece, and Brutus and Cassius were both slain. Anthony and Octavius now divided the world between them. Anthony taking the East and Octavius the West. Anthony began journeying through Asia to see his realm. - Arriving was at Tarsus, he send word to Cleopatra (51-30 BC) to appear on a charge by reason of having offended Rome before him. She came. She sailed up the river to Tarsus in a beautiful barge. Anthony rowed to see the splendid sight. Cleopatra welcomed him not as judge but as a comrade and they became lovers.

The battle of Actium
The Pasttimes of Catullus.
From an aninymus British print.
For Cleopatra, Anthony abandoned the sovereignty of the world. He neglected affairs at Rome to be with her in Egypt. She saw through him. In time it showed that Anthony would no further assert the supremacy of Rome. In time he was declared an enemy of Rome and a fleet was sent under Octavius to conquer him at Actium. At first Anthony seemed likely to win but then Cleopatra's supporting fleet fled with her from the battle. Anthony took a swift galley and went after her. Bewildered the other ships surrendered to Octavius.

Cleopatra's last feast
Cleopatras Last feast
Painted by Henri Pierre Picou of Nantes.
Octavius had settled the issues of the war and brought his fllet to Egypt. Cleopatra could not beguile him. She knew this was the end and wanted one last time be with Anthony. In her prettiest barge of state she sailed down the Nile. Then she shut herself in a tomb and Anthony stabbed himself. On the news of that, Clepatra poisoned herself. This can easily be the fate of such wicked who have means but know not God.

The age of peace
The Age of Peace
From the painting by George Hiltensperger.
It was during the reign of Emperor Octavius (27 BC - 14 AD) that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The Roman Senate voted to present to him the title `Augustus', a godlike Caesar. During his reign it is said, Rome reached the zenith of its glory. But it also saw the first harbingers of the downfall of Rome, the rising of the 10 tribes.
