Notes and References
[CMV2] The Moffat Version translates Zechariah 13:6 "... I got them in My harlot's house."
[040] Some Bibles have the name "Christ" in this verse. In doing so they followed the "koine" (Symbol= in the Greek NT) text which came from Antioch and Constantinopel, that is the path of the received (Deutsch: Reichstext) text of the Greek New Testament. The textual `apparatus' (explanations) also indicates, by using `al' that a sizeable number of sources from various groups contain that addition. The apparatus `syc' indicates that a 5th century (AD) manuscript used by Cureton (1858) also contains the name "Christ".
[200] GB, German Bibles here refers to the Dr. Martin Luther and Zürcher translations. These two translations, thankfully, translate "das Gericht" (`the judgment'). Those Bibles which leave out the article "the" attached to the noun `judgment' change the meaning from the great, final judgment to some intermediate state such as limbo and/or purgatory, this way teaching false Catholic doctrine to unsuspecting readers. The modern rules which translators/ transliterators apparently followed when it suited their theology, on the "article," the "tenses,: — aorists and perfect, — the "pronoun," the "preposition," the "intensive," "Hebraisms," and "parallelisms," pave the way for new and anti-Protestant doctrines concerning the "Person of Christ," "Satan," "Inspiration of the Bible," "The Second Coming of Christ," and other topics.
[220] When the Greek of the New Testament was translated into Latin by Jerome (A.D. 354 - 420), he used the Roman law term `justificatio,' understood by the Roman mind as meaning `to declare right', where he instead should have used, "make righteous." Thus, the Vulgate introduced a Roman model for what salvation is all about. Its ideas were taken from the Latin judicial world. Only later did the consequence become apparent; it led, at last, to the "evangelical" obsession about guaranteeing people places in heaven. We hear it today in the idea "once saved, always saved." The bottom-line meaning of salvation is misunderstood as being a legal declaration and a contract with Deity. This distortion is unspeakably damaging to the potential for genuine liberation. After all, fallen nature being what it is, if salvation is available on a contractual basis, then, in the end, the ultimate issue will always be the contract. (The New Covenant is more than mere unilateral external contract; it includes continued surrender by man and the promise of active heart rewriting by the Holy Spirit.)
Jerome's contemporary, Augustine (A.D. 347 - 420), who knew Latin but not Greek, understood that man could not truly obey anyway, because of his corruption by Original Sin. Such being the case, a contractual plan of salvation was the logical, nay, the only option.
The reason for the slating of "scholasticism", as advanced by the Oxford movement, the `revision committee', was to destroy the Bible without burning it. All these many translations brought in confusion in Christianity, the effect of underhand workings of secret societies under Vatican control. Very many underhand evil influences flourished first in the 19th century and represent direct Satanic planning to destroy the saving gospel to the world in the 1700s. He has gone out to deceive the nations, we ought to never forget that (Rev. 20:8-10). One influence spreading during that time was that started by Franz Mesmer which became known as mesmerism. High priests of free masonry know that this took place. They also know that Charles Darwin was personally tutored by Satan in order to get rid of Bible truths. Evolution was started to destroy truths like (1) creation, (2) God's 7th day Sabbath, (3) the plan of redemption, (4) the fall of man - opening the way for the new age movement and occult teachings that spread through all nations. Promulgators of evolution are helping the purposes of evil which disqualifies them from being a member of Christ's Kingdom. This false teaching has the power to (a) induce spiritual blindness, (b) convince, and (c) convert along doctrines of devils. It is Satan's purpose and lie that he will win the great controversy against Christ. That is the reason why it is so hard today to win people to Christ and have them live up to the high standard of His Kingdom. Many Christian churches engage in a form of "Christian idolatry" which their members are not even aware of because they do not know what constitutes `idolatry', `Baal' worship. A common denominator among all false religions, Christian and non-Christian, is the believe in an immortal soul which is in reality the exaltation of man, making man to be like God. This is taught especially in Mormonism, Catholicism and Protestantism. Eastern religions have variant forms of it, so does Islam. The god of Mormonism was once a man himself who became exalted. No Christian ought to fall for such ideas which are not taught in the Bible. The tentacles of this idea that the dead are not really dead spread throughout the world among nearly all religions. It is of Satan for the Word of God says, "the dead know not anything" (Eccl. 9:5) and "the soul that sinneth, it shall die." (Eze. 18:4). Today we witness that times are getting harder and harder on earth. One calamity after another strikes and people are glued to the media to take it all in. Satan has also learned to use the environment for his purposes. All these events taking place has the effect to impress people with the importance of Sunday sacredness. What may happen? Believing himself isolated and living on a poisoned planet, man is making strenuous efforts to find other planets (to live on for the rich). Someday soon Satan will use that and cause devils to appear as if they are visiting from other worlds or from distant galaxies and warn earth bound people that this world will destroy itself unless something serious is done. They will claim that they have out of body experiences. Since many believe in an immortal soul, this will fool the world! Hollywood has helped these ideas along with productions like `Star Wars', `E.T.', `Armageddon', `Independence Day', `Strange Encounters' and so on. Satan's "overwhelming surprise" will be launched with all its horrors - the number of which only God knows. When spirits of devils promise that if their recommendations to the leaders of the world are followed very carefully, they will usher in a glorious new age of peace and prosperity - of no more war and crime - where everyone will live in unity, they will be deceived into believing their lies. So listen to presidents. What are they really saying? What sentiments shine through? However, as difficulties increase and calamities multiply, the spirits will put forth all their efforts to bring before the masses of the earth the sacredness of Sunday. With the religious leaders looking forward to 1000 years of peace on earth, they will work hard to accomplish it. Laws will be passed by governments that will force everyone to go along with it whether they believe it or not. Law enforcement will explain to people that such a law is necessary to ensure the well-being of society. This way such a Sunday law will be passed with no problem at all. All nations are involved in Sunday worship. Satan has chosen Sunday as his day. The Creator has chosen the seventh day. Faithful Christians who honor Sunday and treat God's holy day of the Bible like a common work day, do not realize who they are honoring! May they listen up and search out the truth now. Pray to God for understanding His truths which are revealed as they read. Compare scripture with scripture and pray. It takes all spare time for people to do this work in order to save themselves out of a world heading for destruction. Only Christ's Second Coming can save man. We must be His 100% to be saved.
[230] The "rest" in Hebrews: The List of changed meanings may also include Hebrews 4:9, most often rendered in all Bibles as, "There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God." What does it say in the more or most trustworthy Bible, the Greek text? In order to make this important scripture (Hebr. 4:9) quite clear for everyone to see,
we post the portion of `Langenscheidt's
Greek-English Dictionary' 6th edition, 1961, p. 341, where it is documented. The literal reading of the passage would be, `There is left `apo-leip ', or `there remains' - the keeping of the Sabbath for (the) people of God,' since the primary meaning of `apoleipomai' is `to leave,' there is no indication that it only means rest here, to interpret it like that is blunting the truths contained in the word of God. The dictionary has `to leave' as the first meaning followed by `lose,' which of course is not the meaning of the passage. In fact, we today may not have recognized all these particular shades of meaning as they were used in the time of Paul. For us it is important to know that a play on words is taking place, namely on the word translated as `rest'. The author used two different words for "rest", he uses first various forms of the word `katapausis' in verse 1,3,5,10,11 and `katapausomai' in verse 4, and katapauomai in verse 8. The second word is used only once in all the Bible, it is the word `sabbatismos,' meaning literally `keeping of the Sabbath.' That this is true can be more readily seen in the German translation of the text as presented in the Swiss Zurcher Bible rendition. Since Young's and Strong's Concordances had American denominational backgrounds, we may regard the Langenscheidt's Dictionary as more objective since it reads the word as it is plainly written late in the life of the Apostle Paul (he didn't have to give his name, they knew it was his, a student of Gamaliel, Acts 22:3, a doctor of the law, Acts 5:34, who understood the priestly services from his namesake, Num. 7:59).
One more comment: While Langenscheidt's Dictionary shows only one meaning for `sabbatismos', Young's and Strong's Concordance does not. They merely try to adopt `sabbatismos' to the shades of meaning of `katapausis'. It seems quite obvious that the author uses a specific word to give a specific message which is not the same as `katapausis' relates, namely the kind of Sabbath keeping rest God instituted in creation week, on which Christ only rested (Hebr. 4:12), and which is to be kept ever since until God's people are in heaven and beyond - since God's law is eternal - so is the Sabbath (Eze. 20:20; Isa. 40:18-29; 41:10; 45:22).
Explaining Matthew 28:1, Acts 20:7: Now that we explained `sabbatismo' in Hebrews 4:9, let us also explain Matthew 28:1 where we read, "In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first [day] of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre." In this scripture the Greek Bible calls the 7th day Sabbath in the Greek singular `sabbaton' [215b] and the first day, resurrection day, is called `mia sabbaton'. That is how the days of the week could be called `mia', first, `duo' second, `treis' third, `tessares' fourth, `pente' fifth and `paraskeueue' sixth and `mia sabbath' means here "one (day) of the sabbaths", or the first day after the sabbath, the second day after the sabbath ) and so on, thus underscoring the sacredness of the Sabbath even after the cross.[**] Each weekday was thus called at least in thought, rarer so in word, with reference to God's holy 7th day Sabbath. The word "end" in our text above, just means after the sun set and a new day began with the night portion first - the divine view of a day goes from sunset to sunset. That is why we are counseled to observe the edges of the holy Sabbath Day. See here for more. All the attempts to proof Sunday holiness based on what the early Christian church did on the first day of the working week, has no force of law. Only God can make a law to let us know on which day to worship Him. Those who deny that, deny the Creator God and thus are in discordance with the divine precepts. It may be of help to read how the `7th Day Baptist' minister Thomas Tillam defends the Sabbath. Pay attention how, according to him even in 1657, Sunday keeping churches are not sure or don't know when to start and end their Sunday keeping. By and large, they do not celebrate Sunday for 24 hours.
[Insert **] See John 20:1; Geneva Bible; Souter's Pocket Greek Lexicon; BDAG, pg. 910, saßßaton, "The Derivation of 'Sabbath', Biblica 36, '55, 182-201; cf. The New Catholic Encyclopedia, "Sabbath", © 2003, pg. 458; R. North; Luke 18:12, means he fasted "twice in respect to Sabbath". According to R.C.H. Lenski, since "[t]he Jews had no names for the weekdays," they "designated them with reference to their Sabbath" (1943, p. 1148). Thus, mia ton sabbaton means "the first (day) with reference to the Sabbath," i.e., the first (day) following the Sabbath (Lenski, p. 1148), or, as we would say in 21st century English, "the first day of the week." (Lyons). Generally the Jews said, the "one day (of the sabbath)", "two day", "three day" etc. for the days of the week, leaving the word `sabbath' out.
The Talmud: After spending years examining Jewish writings in the Babylonian Talmud, Hebraist John Lightfoot wrote `A Commentary on the New Testament from the Talmud and Hebraica', in which he expounded upon the Hebrew method of counting the days of the week. He noted: "The Jews reckon the days of the week thus; One day (or the first day) of the sabbath: two (or the second day) of the sabbath;" etc. (1859, 2:375, emp. in orig.). Lightfoot then quoted from two different Talmud tractates. Maccoth alludes to those who testify on "the first of the sabbath" about an individual who stole an ox. Judgment was then passed the following day—"on the second day of the sabbath" (Lightfoot, 2:375, emph. in orig.; Maccoth, Chapter 1). Bava Kama describes ten enactments ordained by a man named Ezra, including the public reading of the law "on the second and fifth days of the sabbath," and the washing of clothes "on the fifth day of the sabbath" (Lightfoot, 2:375; Bava Kama, Chapter 7). In Michael Rodkinson's 1918 translation of Maccoth and Bava Kama, he accurately translated "the second day of the sabbath" as Monday, "the fifth day of the sabbath" as Thursday, and "the first of the sabbath" as Sunday. (Lyons).
